2010 Teen Zine Theme: Identity
This year’s Teen Zine theme, Identity, is all about you!
Working under the theme of Identity, students in grades 6–12 may submit one page no larger than 11 x 14 inches, any medium (visual art or writing) that is representative of a self-portrait.

NEW!
M.LiT, Museum Leaders in Training, is the new after-school leadership program at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts. This competitive 12-month program is open to teen applicants, grades 8–12.
In hands-on workshops, insightful lectures, and engaging discussions, participants will learn from visiting artists, college students, and professional speakers. Students will acquire new techniques and an understanding of the visual arts in relation to history and culture. They will also learn how to recognize the merits of others’ works, build healthy relationships with peers and mentors, and develop an understanding of the function of art in society.

These students will receive first consideration.
Regular Application Deadline: Wed, Apr 21, 2010. Students will receive notification of their acceptance by May 5, 2010.

The Virginia Museum of Fine Arts is accepting nominations for
Director’s Cut, a free program for students in grades 6–12 with a passion for digital filmmaking. A series of required Creative Film
Workshops, led by artist and filmmaker Todd Raviotta,
offers students guidance and assistance in using
a variety of alternative methods to create one-of-akind
works of experimental film. The workshops
culminate with
Teen Talent: Color + Light, a visually
intriguing exhibition of performance and film, featuring
digital works of art created by
Director’s Cut
participants.

SPRING 2010 TEEN PROGRAMS
Ever wonder what it takes to be a studio artist, or do you just
enjoy being creative? Spend some time in the studio and become
involved in the unique learning environment of VMFA. Workshops
are for teens in grades 6-12. Registration: VMFA Ticket Desk in

Drawing Club
Hang out after school at VMFA! Guest artists will advise teens
during drawing exercises in VMFA studios. All materials are provided.

Pre-college Crash Course
These workshops are designed for high-school students interested
in pursuing education in fine arts. Students will enhance their
creative knowledge, achieve a better understanding of a particular
field of art, develop portfolios, and meet peers with similar
interests.

A Tour for Teens
Teen Talent: Color + Light
Join VMFA for a Grand Opening night of music, monologue, dance,
theater, and film. Students in grades 6-12 from Richmond and surrounding
counties have been invited to showcase their skills during this
two-hour event. Video filmmaking projects created during the Teen
Talent filmmaking series Color + Light will be showcased throughout
the museum. While you're here, don't forget to pick up your copy
of the 2010 Teen Zine: Identity and check out artworks on Teen
Zine: Big Screen!

Scholarship Information
Thank you for your interest in youth programs at VMFA. Scholarships to attend Studio Classes for Youth and Teens are based on financial need and are available on a limited basis to students ages 5-17. Scholarships are valid for one class; requests for specific classes will be considered but can not be guaranteed. Scholarships will be awarded based on available funding. Scholarship application information is confidential and
used only for scholarship criteria evaluation. All scholarship applications are due to VMFA for consideration
three weeks in advance of the start of the requested class. To apply please print, fill out, and mail or fax this
scholarship application form.

Standards of Learning
The Standards of Learning for Virginia Public Schools describe the commonwealth's expectations for student learning and achievement in grades K-12 in English, mathematics, science, history/social science, technology, the fine arts, foreign language, health and physical education, and driver education.
These standards represent a broad consensus of what parents, classroom teachers, school administrators, academics, and business and community leaders believe schools should teach and students should learn.
VMFA Teen Studio Instructors design gallery-based instruction emphasizing SOL achievement. A complete listing of the Standards of Learning is available online.
VMFA’s Compliance with Code of Virginia 22.1-296
Enacted in 2006, Section 22.1-296.1 of the Code of Virginia requires that all persons who provide services to school children during school sponsored activities and have direct contact with students certify that 1) the individual has not been convicted of a felony or any offense involving the sexual molestation or physical or sexual abuse or rape of a child; and indicate 2) whether the individual has been convicted of a crime of moral turpitude.
